Managing sales tax categories

For customers in certain states, Tock is taking sales tax off of your plate by automatically collecting and remitting sales tax in accordance with required Marketplace Facilitator laws. The state Tock is currently collecting and remitting sales tax for, and who these changes are applicable to, is:

  • Illinois (10/4/2021)
  • Texas (11/1/2021)
  • Washington (11/1/2021)
  • Washington, D.C. (11/1/2021)
  • Rhode Island (6/1/2022)
  • Michigan (7/1/2022)
  • Tennessee (7/1/2022)
  • Wisconsin (8/1/2022)
  • Oklahoma (8/1/2022)
  • Minnesota (9/1/2022)
  • Louisiana (9/1/2022)

Responsibility for setting, collecting, and remitting sales tax now rests with Tock for all Tock prepaid reservations, events, and merchandise. Other taxes not remitted by Tock will be paid out to your business as usual. We’ve automatically updated your sales tax settings with categories and rates, and you can access your settings in Control Panel.

How to view your tax settings

  1. Navigate to Control Panel and Sales Tax

  2. Under Sales Tax, you will see the tax categories and tax rates assigned to your experiences, items, and add-ons.
    • Tax Category: the category you defined for each experience, item, and add-on, such as general sales tax, food, or beverage. The category determines the associated tax rate.
    • Tax Rate: the relevant rate associated with the category you selected, based on your state's tax laws.

How to add new sales tax settings

Adding a tax category to a new menu item:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel and Menus and Items
  2. Select Item Library and click Add New Item
  3. After filling out your new item details, you will see a section called Price and tax details, where you will be able to select the tax category for your new menu item.

Adding a tax category to a new experience:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel and Experiences
  2. Select Add experience 
  3. After filling out your new item details, you will see a section called Sales tax category, where you will be able to select the tax category for your new experience.

Adding a tax category to a new event:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel and Events
  2. Select Add event 
  3. After filling out your event details, you will reach the Tickets section, where you will be able to select the tax category for your new event.

How to edit your sales tax settings

Editing a tax category on an existing menu item:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel and Menus and Items
  2. Select Item Library and then click on the existing menu item that you would like to edit.
  3. Scroll to the Pricing and tax details and select the pencil icon.
  4. Click on the tax category drop down and select a new category to adjust your settings.

Editing a tax category on an existing experience:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel and Experiences
  2. Select the existing experience you would like to edit.
  3. Click Pricing in the menu on the left and scroll to the Sales tax category section, where you will be able to edit the tax category.

Editing a tax category on an existing event:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel and Events
  2. Select the existing event you would like to edit.
  3. Click Tickets in the menu on the left and scroll to the Sales tax category section, where you will be able to edit the tax category.
